Short answer
A raw-honey or colloidal-oatmeal mask will make dull skin look smoother and more even for a day, and daily sunscreen is what keeps it brighter for good. Skip baking soda and lemon on your face — both do more harm than the glow is worth.
- Keep
- Raw honey, colloidal oatmeal, plain yogurt
- Skip
- Baking soda, lemon juice
- Fades dark spots
- Sunscreen every day, plus vitamin C, niacinamide or azelaic acid
- Realistic wait
- Glow the same day; dark spots 8–12 weeks
We first published this guide in 2019 with four kitchen remedies: baking soda, oatmeal, honey and lemon. We have rewritten it because two of those four can hurt your skin, and because the original promised more than a kitchen can deliver.
Here is the honest version. Home masks can make skin look fresher. They cannot remove sun spots or age spots. For those you need sunscreen and one proven brightening ingredient — and we name the products below.
Dull skin has three common causes, and a mask fixes only one
Cause 1
Dead cells on the surface
Old skin cells scatter light instead of reflecting it. Gentle exfoliation and moisture fix this within days — this is where home masks help.
Cause 2
Dry, thirsty skin
Dehydrated skin looks flat and grey. Honey and oatmeal both hold water in the skin, so the effect shows straight after rinsing.
Cause 3
Sun damage and dark spots
Spots and uneven tone sit deeper, in the pigment. No kitchen ingredient fades them. Sunscreen and targeted serums do, over months.
Honey is the best remedy on the original list
Honey draws water into the skin and has mild antibacterial properties. That makes it a gentle, low-risk mask for dry or dull skin. Your face will look plumper and smoother after one use.
What honey will not do is lighten dark spots. The 2019 version of this page called honey "homeopathic" — it is not, and we have removed that claim. Use raw honey rather than a heat-treated supermarket blend. Manuka honey is fine but optional; the price jump buys you little on your face.
- Start with a clean, damp face Damp skin makes the honey easier to spread and easier to rinse off.
- Spread a thin layer of raw honey About one teaspoon covers the whole face. Keep it away from your eyes and hairline.
- Leave it for 10–15 minutes Lie down if you can — it will drip.
- Rinse with lukewarm water Not hot water. Hot water strips the moisture you just added. Pat dry and moisturise.
Up to two or three times a week. If you are allergic to pollen or bee products, test a small patch on your inner arm first and wait 24 hours.
Oatmeal soothes, but it does not detox anything
Finely ground (colloidal) oatmeal is recognised by the U.S. FDA as a skin protectant. It calms redness and itching and leaves skin feeling soft. That is genuinely useful if your skin is dull because it is dry or irritated.
The original article said oatmeal "detoxifies" the skin. It does not — skin does not store toxins that a mask can pull out. We have also dropped the raw egg from the recipe: it adds nothing that yogurt does not, and raw egg near your mouth is a salmonella risk.
- Grind two tablespoons of plain oats Use a blender or coffee grinder until it is a fine powder. Colloidal oatmeal packets save you this step.
- Mix with plain yogurt and a little honey About one tablespoon of unflavoured yogurt and one teaspoon of honey. Add warm water until it is a soft paste.
- Apply and wait 15 minutes Spread evenly over clean skin, avoiding the eyes.
- Rinse with lukewarm water Rub gently in small circles as you rinse for a very mild exfoliation, then moisturise.
Skip the yogurt if you have a dairy allergy — oats, honey and water work on their own.
Skip baking soda and lemon on your face
Both remedies can make skin look brighter for an hour, because they strip the surface. The price is irritation, and irritation in medium and deeper skin tones often heals as a new dark mark — the opposite of what you wanted.
Sunscreen does more for dark spots than any mask
Most uneven tone comes from the sun. Every unprotected day adds pigment, so any brightening routine without daily sunscreen is running on the spot. Once sunscreen is in place, one of three well-studied ingredients will fade existing marks over two to three months:
- Vitamin C — an antioxidant that slows pigment production. Use it in the morning, under sunscreen.
- Niacinamide — reduces how much pigment reaches the skin surface, and is gentle enough for most skin types.
- Azelaic acid — targets dark marks and redness, and suits skin that reacts to stronger acids.

Home remedies are cheap, but slow and limited
Where home remedies win
- Honey and oats cost almost nothing
- You know every ingredient
- Visible softness and glow the same day
- Very low risk for most skin
Where they fall short
- No effect on sun spots or age spots
- Results last a day or two
- Messy — honey drips
- Two of the popular ones (baking soda, lemon) damage skin
Can I brighten my skin overnight?
Not in a lasting way. A mask can make skin look fresher by morning, but fading real dark spots takes eight to twelve weeks of sunscreen plus a brightening ingredient.
Is manuka honey better for skin than normal honey?
Manuka has stronger antibacterial activity, which matters for wounds. For a face mask, any raw honey does the same job at a fraction of the price.
Is it safe to put lemon on my face if I stay indoors?
It is still very acidic and can sting and irritate. Daylight through windows also counts. We recommend a vitamin C serum instead — it delivers the useful part of lemon without the risk.
How often can I use a honey or oatmeal mask?
Two or three times a week is plenty. Oatmeal is gentle enough for daily use if your skin is dry or itchy.
Can I use vitamin C, niacinamide and azelaic acid together?
Yes, but start with one for four weeks so you know how your skin reacts. Add a second only if you want faster results and your skin is calm.
Our verdict
Keep the honey and oatmeal masks for a quick, gentle glow. Drop baking soda and lemon. If you want dark spots to actually fade, the one purchase that matters most is a sunscreen you will wear every day — then add a single brightening serum.
